Dress
1. At all levels of competition, riders must wear an approved helmet (ASTM or higher). This includes any time anyone is riding a horse, including schooling on the flat. Violation will be penalized and may result in elimination.
2. Carrying a whip of any kind during a Dressage test is not permitted. Using a whip while schooling for a dressage test is permitted. If a whip is carried during the Endurance or Show Jumping phases, it is not to exceed 30" in length.
3. Spurs capable of wounding a horse are not permitted. Spurs must be of smooth metal. There must be a shank pointing only towards the rear, which must be no more than 1 3/8" long and with no rowels. The end must be blunt. If the shank is curved, the spurs may only be worn with the curve pointing downwards. Swan neck spurs are allowed.
4. DRESSAGE TEST
4.1. Tests and Horse Trials (Novice through Preliminary) - Hunt Cap; Coat - dark color or tweed, tail coats are not permitted; Shirt - white or light color, with stock and pin, or choker, or tie; Gloves (if worn) - dark color, tan, beige, or white; Jodhpurs, Breeches - light color or white; Boots - black, brown, field or jodhpur boots. Chap, half-chaps, and/or leggings not allowed.
4.2. Horse Trials (Intermediate and Advanced) - Two or Three Day Events. As above except no tweed coat. When tails are worn: Top Hat - black or dark blue; Shirt - stock with pin; Gloves (required) - white or dark color; Breeches - as above; Boots - preferably black dress. Chaps, half-chaps, and/or leggings not permitted. Protective headgear can be worn without penalty. Spurs, in accordance with Rule 3, are required at the Intermediate and Advanced Horse Trials, Intermediate Two-Day Events, and all Three-Day Events.
5. CROSS-COUNTRY TEST
Lightweight clothing is appropriate for this Test. Protective headgear in accordance with Rule 1. This headgear may be any color. A body protecting vest with a shirt with sleeves (any color) must be worn. We suggest these should pass or surpass ASTM standards. Breeches may be any color; Gloves (if worn) may be any color; Boots - black, brown, field, or dress. Chaps, half-chaps, and/or leggings are not permitted.
6. JUMPING TEST
Hunting dress or uniform. Protective headgear, with chin strap, in accordance with Rule 1 designed expressly for equestrian use. Hat covers other than solid black or dark blue not permitted. Coat - dark color or tweed (if Novice through Preliminary). Shirt - stock with pin, choker, or tie. Gloves (if worn) - dark color, tan, beige, or white. Jodhpurs, Breeches - light color or white. Boots - black, brown, field, or dress. Chaps, half-chaps, and/or leggings are not permitted.
7. INSPECTION OF DRESS
A steward will be available to inspect whips and spurs before any Test. He has the authority to refuse permission for any competitor to start whose whips or spurs contravene this Rule. Any violation will be reported to the Ground Jury for confirmation.
8. EXTREME HEAT
In extreme heat and/or extreme humidity, the Ground Jury has the option to allow competitors to compete without jackets, in the dressage and/or jumping Tests. In such cases, a competitor must wear a either a long or short sleeved shirt of conservative color without neckwear.

Saddlery
1. EXERCISE AREAS: The following restrictions begin at 3:00 PM of the day prior to the start of the entire competition and continue for the duration of the Event. The following are compulsory: an English-type saddle and any form of bridle, including double bridle, snaffle, gag, or hackamores. Running martingales with stop reins, Irish martingales, bit guards, boots, bandages, fly shields, nose covers, and seat covers are permitted. Side reins are permitted only while lunging an unmounted horse, as are running reins and chambons. Other martingales, any form of gadgets (such as bearing, running, or balancing reins, etc.) and any form of blinkers, are forbidden, under penalty of disqualification.
2. DRESSAGE TEST
2.1. The following are compulsory: an English-type saddle and permitted bridle. A double bridle with cavesson noseband, i.e. bit and bridoon with curb chain (made of metal or leather), is permitted for some tests. A lipstrap and rubber or leather cover for curb chain are optional. The length of the curb bit must not exceed 4 inches in length. The bridoon must not exceed 3 1/8" in diameter. A snaffle made of metal, leather, rubber, or plastic material is permitted for all tests. It may have a cavesson noseband, dropped noseband, crossed noseband, or flash noseband. The noseband must be made entirely of leather or leather-like material, except for a small disc of sheepskin, which may be used in the intersection of two crossed leather straps of a noseband. A breastplate may be used.
2.2. Martingales, bit guards, any kind of gadget (such as bearing, side, running, or balancing reins, etc.), any kind of boot or leg bandages or any kind of blinkers, including earmuffs, hoods, fly shields, nose covers, and seat covers are, under penalty of elimination, strictly forbidden. However, under exceptional circumstances, fly shields may be permitted, to be determined by Ground Jury.
3. CROSS-COUNTRY AND JUMPING TEST
3.1. The type of saddlery is optional with the exception of any form of blinkers, which are forbidden.
3.2. Only unrestricted running martingales with rein stops or Irish martingales are allowed. Reins must be attached to the bit(s) or directly to the bridle. Gags or hackamores are allowed. In the interest of safety, the stirrup iron and stirrup leathers must hang free from the bar of the saddle and the outside flap. There must be no other restrictions or attachments of any kind.

Disqualification
1. Disqualification means that a competitor and his horse(s) may not take further part in the Event. It is applied at the discretion of the Ground Jury.
2. The Ground Jury may disqualify a competitor in the following cases when, in its opinion, the action constitutes unsportsmanlike or abusive conduct:
2.1.Allowing any one other than the competitor to school his horse.
2.2. Riding in the Dressage arena or Jumping arena prior to competition.
2.3. Riding close to the Cross-Country obstacles prior to competition.
2.4. Jumping practice fences that are not flagged.
2.5. Jumping practice fences in the wrong direction.
2.6. Jumping practice fences while they are being held.
2.7. Jumping practice fences that have been raised above the height or beyond the spread allowed.
2.8. Jumping practice fences at times other than those specified by the Organizer.
2.9. Inspecting the Cross-Country fences before they are officially shown to all competitors.
2.10. Inspecting obstacles of the Jumping arena when the arena is closed.
2.11. Entering the Jumping arena on foot after competition has started.
2.12. Abuse of horse.
2.13. Exercising with improper saddlery.
2.14. Use of radio or cellular phone while competing.
3. The Ground Jury may disqualify a competitor if, in its opinion, the competitor constitutes a hazard to the safety or well-being of the competitor, horse, other competitors, their horses, spectators, or others.
